Gilpin redevelopment expected to take eight to ten years
The RTD has a brief write-up of the latest RRHA meeting on the redevelopment of Gilpin Court:
In the coming decade, the blocks of apartment buildings could give way to a community of homes, businesses, schools and government agencies known as North Jackson Ward. It will represent the area’s first attempt at decentralizing poverty, a key goal of the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development and a driving force for RRHA executive director Anthony Scott. [...] The work is scheduled to take eight to 10 years. Construction would most likely begin on vacant and commercial space along First Street, working its way back into the neighborhood.

Lombardy Street development before Council on Monday
The RTD has a piece on CACIL’s fight against the proposed Sylvia Place development on Lombardy Street:
Charleen Baylor, president of the Carver Area Civic Improvement League, [...] said the influx of students in VCU and privately-owned rental units has challenged the improvement efforts and could undermine them further unless the Sylvia Place developers can guarantee owner-occupancy. “We want people in our neighborhood who are going to care about the neighborhood,” said Baylor, who moved to Carver six years ago.
[...]
The development is scheduled to be considered tomorrow by the City Council.
The council’s land-use committee voted 2-0 last week to endorse a special-use permit for the project. The 1.3-acre site was mostly recently used for metal fabrication and is across North Lombardy from the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School.
