Take a Stroll Through Shockoe Hill Cemetery
Richmond’s oldest city-owned cemetery is undergoing a renaissance, and its friends want to reintroduce the all-but-forgotten burial ground – and its many stories – to the region. The Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery, a citizen’s group devoted to helping restore and maintain the city landmark, will host a special celebration for the public at the cemetery on Sunday, September 20, from Noon to 4:00 p.m. Special tours beginning at 1:00 will focus on themes such as the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, Edgar Allen Poe’s lovers and friends, and the other notables buried there, including Chief Justice John Marshall. Noted bagpipe artist Tim Batten of Hanover will perform at 12:30, and refreshments will be served.
Shockoe Hill Cemetery is located between 2nd, Hospital, 4th, and Bates streets, just north of downtown Richmond. Guests are requested to enter the
cemetery through the main Bates Street Entrance. Road signs at 4th and Hospital streets will direct traffic to the entrance gate.

My husband and I arrived in Richmond from New York on Oct. 4 and unfortunately missed the tour of Shockoe. We did manage to get in the gate on Oct 5 while the maintenance team was working. We located my family’s plot, Johnston (Pickett & McCaw) – actually seen in the background of the picture above.
Please keep us informed – we would like to visit again sometime.
