Hippodrome getting $600,000 boost
The Times-Dispatch reports that Mayor Dwight Jones has proposed a plan to hand over $600,000 to the property owner of the Hippodrome, the historic theater located on North Second Street that once hosted prominent African American performers including James Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, and Ray Charles.
These funds (in addition to the $12 million already slated for the restoration) will be used to renovated the Hippodrome and the adjoining Taylor Mansion to create a new venue: The Hipp.
If all goes well, the renovated and renamed space should open in April 2011.

The biweekly Antiques on Broad returns to the parking lot and storefront adjacent to Quirk Gallery (311 West Broad Street) today from 9AM-3PM.

Cemetery clean-up rescues history from the forest
One of the graves reclaimed from the forest during a clean-up today at Evergreen Cemetery in the East End was that of A.D.Price, who founded the A.D.Price Funeral Home. Maggie Walker and John Mitchell Jr. are two of Richmond’s notables also buried at Evergreen Cemetery.

Tour Jackson Ward on a Segway
Tour the “birthplace of Black Capitalism†on a Segway! Jackson Ward is rich in African American history and culture and boasts the largest collection of pre-Civil War homes in the city. Tour includes the Maggie L. Walker Historic Site, the A.D. Price Funeral Home and the Dill House. Nov. 21 (12-2pm)
