Virginia Tea Party comes to Convention Center in October

The Virginia Tea Party Convention 2010 will be held at the Richmond Convention Center on Fri/Sat October 8/9. Invited speakers include Lou Dobbs, Oliver North, Rick Santorum, and Ron Paul. Tickets to attend are $40/day or $50 for both. There will also be a business casual “Freedom Lovers Extravaganza” on Friday night at the Downtown Richmond Marriott (tickets $20), with a performance by Mo’ Sol.

RRHA’s Vision for Gilpin Court

The Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority (RRHA) put on a media tour this week to tout its plans to revitalize public housing in Richmond. Here’s what they had to say about Gilpin Court.

The vision for Gilpin Court is a mix of homes, apartments, and even retail space. Historically, Gilpin is one of the city’s toughest neighborhoods. It’s the oldest housing project. The RRHA wants to dub it, North Jackson Ward. The agency is buying up vacant lots and rundown homes outside of Gilpin hoping to reconnect this area, divided by I-95 with the rest of the city.

Woman Stabbed in Gilpin

From the RTD

Richmond police were investigating a stabbing that injured a woman this morning in the Gilpin Court public-housing complex.

Richmond police said the victim, in her early 40s, was stabbed in the right torso. She was taken to VCU Medical Center for treatment of injuries that police said were not believed to be life-threatening.

Authorities said the stabbing was reported about 8:30 a.m. and occurred in the 1300 block of St. Peter Street.

The suspect was initially described as a light-skinned black male who left the area in a green Honda Civic.

West Broad Arts District Still On Hold

Street Talk in this week’s Style features an article on the lack of progress in establishing a Downtown Arts District on Broad and surrounding streets.

It’s been a year since the idea was floated to create a special arts district along the city’s gallery-heavy corridor downtown, mainly on Broad Street. But there seems to be no timeline for the plan and a city spokeswoman says the mayor has yet to see a proposal.

Reading Celebration Today at Main Library

Celebrate the end of the Summer Reading Program with a day of creative activities, story times, crafts, food, fun and performances.  Uncle Ty-Rone & Friends perform a rockin’ high energy ventriloquist show at 11 am and Community 50/50 presents “The Choice Is Yours,” a hip hop critical thinking workshop for teens at 1 pm.  Reading medalists are recognized and winning prize coupons are drawn at 12 noon.

Franklin Street between 1st and 2nd is blocked off for the street party.  There is a moonwalk and lots of fun events both inside and outside the library.  The event continues till 3:00 pm.
