Samuels stirs council to keep Character Area Designation
In a long and sometimes turbid meeting, City Council tonight discussed a (perhaps?) final round of amendments to the Downtown Master Plan. A main point of contention was the possible removal of language setting a Character Area Designation, would requires development to meet specifications based on the character of the area surrounding the development. In a stirring moment of clarity, City Council 2nd District Representative Charles Samuels spoke up for the Character Area Designation, which was then saved by one vote.

Sylvia Place approved, Samuels has it both ways
The proposal for Sylvia Place passed unanimously at last night’s city council meeting. The RTD has at least twice noted that Second District Councilman Charles R. Samuels abstained from voting on this “because his wife had done legal work for Carver residents on the Sylvia Place proposal”, but fails to mention that Samuels has also received money from the developers of the project. Where is the conflict, exactly?

More than 100,000 people rallied at Green Jobs Now events across the country “to urge leaders to jump start the clean energy economy [and] create real energy solutions that build a new green economy strong enough to create millions of green jobs and lift people out of poverty”. What do you mean, “you people”?
The Richmond Crusade for Voters held a public forum for the candidates for city council this evening at the Military Retirees Club on Chamberlayne Avenue. Recurring issues among the 18 candidates running for the 9 seats were economic development and affordable housing, with public safety and education coming up as well. The three candidates for the 2nd Distric seat being vacated by mayoral candidate Bill Pantele began to really differentiate themselves when asked how to handle the impending redevelopment of Gilpin Court.
